Passport Requirements
If you are planning to visit the UAE as a tourist, obtaining a tourist visa is a straightforward process if you have all the required documents. However, the visa rules and regulations may vary depending on your country of origin. Hence, it is essential to know the specific rules and regulations that apply to your country.
This guide provides information on the different tourist visa options available to expats who intend to travel to the UAE. It is important to note that due to the current pandemic, travel regulations and rules are continuously evolving.

UAE Visa on Arrival
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) offers citizens from certain countries the option to obtain a visa upon arrival. This is the most straightforward and cost-effective way to obtain a visa. If you meet the criteria for a visa on arrival, it is recommended that you take advantage of this option.
The length of stay granted with a visa on arrival will depend on the country that issued your passport. To be eligible, your passport must be valid for at least six months from the date of entry. If your passport has less than six months of validity, you must obtain a new one before travelling to the UAE.
If you are a passport holder of one of the following countries, you are eligible for a 30-day visa:
- Andorra

- Brunei
- Canada
- China
- Hong Kong
- Japan

- The Republic of Ireland

Passport holders from the above countries can access a UAE visa free of charge on arrival. It’s also worth noting that this is a single-entry visa.
Alternatively, if you are a passport holder of one of the following countries, you can access a 90-day, multiple-entry visa free of charge:

If you’re a Mexican citizen, you can access a 180-day, multiple-entry visa upon arrival. To be eligible, you need to show proof of plane tickets, health insurance, and a hotel reservation. Additionally, your passport must have at least six months of validity remaining.
The rules are slightly different for Indian passport holders. If that’s you, you can only access a 14-day visa on arrival if you can present one of the following:
- A USA-issued visit visa valid for at least six months
- A USA-issued green card valid for at least six months or
- Evidence of holding a UK or EU residence.
This visa will set you back at AED 120, which equals about USD 33.
If you’re an Indian passport holder without the above documentation, you must apply for a prearranged tourist visa.
UAE Prearranged Tourist Visas
If your country is not listed, you will need to apply for a prearranged tourist visa before visiting the UAE. The options for visas vary depending on the duration of your stay. However, you must have a valid passport for at least three months before expiry.
To apply for a prearranged visa, you will need:
- A colour copy of your passport
- A colour photograph of yourself
- An application form
- A copy of your plane ticket
To visit the UAE, you can choose between different types of tourist visas. You can get a non-extendable 48 or 96-hour visa for USD 10 or USD 30, respectively. Alternatively, you can get a single-entry short-term tourist visa for USD 90, which can be extended for an additional fee.
If you need to stay longer, you can apply for a short-term multiple-entry visa for a fee of USD 175, which is valid for 30 days and can also be extended for an additional fee of USD 230.
For longer stays, you can apply for a long-term tourist visa. A single-entry visa, valid for 90 days, costs USD 190, while a multiple-entry visa costs USD 460. Both types of visas can be extended for an additional fee of USD 230.
If you are from Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, or Iran, you may need to provide additional documentation, such as your National ID card.
One-Year Remote Working Visa
Last year, the UAE implemented a remote working visa program for digital nomads who work from home due to the pandemic but want to spend an extended time in the UAE. This program is open to foreign employees and foreign business owners from all countries.
Before the introduction of this visa program, one would have needed the sponsorship of an Emirati national or a job offer in the UAE to stay there for an extended period. With this visa, those barriers are removed, making it possible for a larger population of foreign workers to explore the UAE.
However, it is important to note that this visa program does not allow for the establishment of a business in the UAE. Therefore, if your goal is to establish a business in the country, this one-year remote working visa may not be the best option for you.
On the other hand, if you want to experience life in the UAE before deciding whether to set up your business there, this visa could be a great option. Spending a year in the country while building business relationships remotely could be a good start to your new life as an entrepreneur in the UAE.
To apply for the remote working visa, you will need to pay USD 287. There are other costs involved, including UAE health insurance and ID fees, which may vary. In total, expect to spend upwards of USD 600.
To apply for this visa, you’ll need a passport with no less than six months of validity and UAE health insurance.
Employees will also need to present the following:
- Confirmation of your job
- A contract for work lasting at least one year
- Evidence of earning at least USD 5,000 per month
- Bank statements covering the last three months
Business owners will also need to present the following:
- Proof that you own a business for at least one year
- An average monthly income of at least USD 5000
- Bank statements for the last three months
Investor and Entrepreneur Residency Visas
If you are an expat investor or entrepreneur planning to establish your business in the UAE, the Golden Visa program can be an excellent option for you. This program provides 5- and 10-year visa options specifically designed for expats.
Unlike other long-term visa options available in the UAE, the Golden Visa program does not require a national sponsor. Successful applicants can enjoy the freedom to travel to and from the UAE and the option to include family members and executives on their visas.

Dubai Immigration Procedures
Assuming you’ve completed all the necessary visa and documentation requirements, the immigration process at Dubai Airport is very efficiently streamlined. The process is supported by advanced technology and innovation, which is aligned with Dubai’s cutting-edge architecture.
Upon arrival, you will not be greeted by border patrol staff. Instead, you will pass through an electronic gate, known as an e-gate. The e-gate will enable you to register your identity and present your passport and documentation. The e-gate will also scan your retina.
Although unlikely, there is a chance that you may be selected for random screening. In this case, you will need to provide evidence of your visa. If you do not have a hard copy of your visa confirmation number, a fee of AED 30 may apply.
